Injuries are a pain in the arse, figuratively and occasionally literally.

We don’t ever want to feel broken, and the physical pain that comes with injuries is sometimes enough to deter us from doing the activities we love. After all, pain is an indication that something isn’t right. It’s the brain’s way of telling the body to ease up on whatever activity is continuing to contribute to the pain, and the body will naturally inhibit any significant production of force. This is why we feel weaker when we injure a body part – so that any further damage is minimal. Take a sprained ankle for example. Initially after the injury, swelling and inflammation occurs. Any movement or weight bearing on it will cause pain, which is completely normal and a natural response, so that we don’t end up making it worse.

In this scenario, we could react two different ways:

  1. Take some complete time off and feel bad about being injured and not being able to do anything,
  2. Continue to train around the injury, while working to improve recovery and still maintain strength and fitness.

You can guess which one is the preferred option.

Option 2 takes us from a ‘victim’ mindset to a ‘problem-solving’ mindset. It gives us back the control over our lives and our choices, and enables us to always look forward.

Unfortunately injuries are a part of the health and fitness journey, and if you do anything physically intense for a long enough period of time, you will eventually experience some form of injury, whether it’s minor, acute, chronic, or serious.

Most of the time you’ll experience it on the minor side, which usually you’ll describe as a ‘bit of a niggle’ but it’s still enough that you notice it while you do things, and it’s enough to make you think twice about certain movements.

Many factors can contribute to the risk of injuries, including but not limited to physical age, training age (how long you’ve been training), recovery i.e. nutrition and sleep, previous injures, genetic predispositions to injuries, type of exercise, and even the choices you make during a workout. An ill-timed decision can lead to an unlucky accident, and sometimes these things just happen.

But the important thing to remember is that you attempt to do something about it while staying active in some capacity. Just because what you can do isn’t exactly what you used to be able to do, doesn’t mean that it’s not worth doing. That’s why we have scaling options in our workouts – there is an infinite combination of movements and schemes that can be tailored to your individual capacity.

After all, if only one part of your body is injured, you’ve still got the rest of your body that can move.

Hell, even if 2 or more are injured, there is still something you can do. Physical activity is the best thing you can do to recuperate from an injury.

While you’re staying active to train and work around the injury, it is in your best interest to determine how and why the injury occurred in the first place.

Freak accident while lifting weights? Possibly. But were there other factors at the time that could have contributed to this ‘freak’ accident? Poor strength, positioning, technique, or perhaps a lack of understanding of the movement? Maybe it wasn’t noticeable at the time, but perhaps over a long period of time, your body has compensated a particular movement due to a muscle/joint being weaker and less stable than another, and there has been eventual wear and tear, and that ‘freak accident’ was the straw that broke the camel’s back. These are problems that can be solved, and by taking that approach, we can move forward with how you recover from the injury, as well as how you try to prevent the injury from occurring again.

This is a much better mindset than just accepting the fact that you have an injury and that ‘it will always be like that’. You’re not doing anyone any favours with that mindset.

Even if you have a long term injury that you can’t just seem to figure out, that’s what our Coaches are here for.

We will help you in the process of training and strengthening your body, as well as educating you on what to do and how to take care of yourself. Pain and injuries can always be improved on in some capacity. You’ve just got to be willing to give it a fair go.

If you need further help on managing injuries, contact us to organise a Personal Training session with one of our Coaches.
