Eating the same means you don’t have to make a decision every single meal.
Every single day, we have to make thousands of decisions.
Family, work decisions, decisions for other people…some big and some small. Some super important and others you would not even consider a decision but it requires your attention.
What to eat might not seem important, but you still have to decide what to eat many times per day right?
We have options to buy food, there’s food in the house ready to cook or eat, we can buy prepped food. We have choices and decisions there to be made.
Input “decision fatigue”.
Decision fatigue grows throughout the day.
Picture this, you’ve made decisions all day, so when it comes to thinking about what you’re going to eat, your ability to make a decision has decreased, therefore you experience decision fatigue and end up making poor choices.
If you’re having to decide each day what to eat for breakfast, a snack, what to eat for lunch then what to cook for dinner…you’re making too many diet related choices each day.
So, if you don’t have any of your meals planned in advance then each time you want to eat through the day, you have to decide what to eat.
Come the end of the day or week, your decision making ability has gone, therefore this is where you opt for take away or pizza or something less than desirable.
What can you do?
- Meal plan – write it down. Plan out 3 days in advance
- You don’t have to eat exactly the same thing each day, but have 2-3 meals on rotation and eat them until you get sick of it then choose something else.
- Each night, mentally plan out your food for the next day.
Imagine waking up knowing exactly what you’re eating for brekky and lunch!! You have so much more energy and mental space to do other things.
By doing a small amount of planning each night or once every few days, you’ll find that this greatly reduces decision fatigue, since you won’t have to be making nearly as many dietary decisions per day.
When you allow yourself to be flexible, but include a little bit of planning, you’ll definitely feel a lot more organised and in control.
